This is the first class (after the weekend intensive) of Mentors Professional Workshop – learning to mentor teens, young adults and their families.

And what do you think I would want to start with on the grand journey?

You!

You must lead by example. That example is not “look at me! I’m doing the same crap you are!!”. No, we lead by living it but not preaching about it. Just understanding from our own challenges how to appreciate our client’s challenges.

As mentors, our duty is to grow as human beings. To take on our own personal and creative challenges and live by the guidelines we are setting for our clients.

To that end, we must add the following things in our lives.
I have spoken before about the times I would do Reiki, Therapeutic Touch and other healing modalities to people when I lived in Montreal.

Two things become clear that will help those who wish to Mentor Young Adults towards success in all aspects of their lives.

1) No outside force heals a person. It is the person’s choices and belief system that allows for the healing.

2) You can only truly grow when you add three things into your daily routine:

Something Reflective; Something Creative and Something Physical

Reflective
Meditation etc.,
Prayer
Success Recap

Creative (performance)
coding drawing writing
i.e. Making something
Using your canvas

Physical (walking)
Muscle based exercise – Weights; Tai Chi; resistance training; etc.,

Here are some more things I recommend that you incorporate into your life to prepare you to become a truly great life coach for young adults:

Meditation exercises (live with Ken ☺)
General 10 min Visualization
Grounding
Sleep/Wake routine
Thankfulness routine

Take your own Mentor classes when you can.
Ask your fellow MIT’s to switch 30 min sessions – 1 with you as Mentor (real work) – next with you as Mentee.Do real work. First time do GCS – then start a daily routine the following week – share how this goes at your next class. Write down questions.

Also, keep notes to ask Ken

Volunteer Interim Mentee – someone you will work on in your second month of mentor classes.

Choosing a VIM.
Using the VIM form to sign.
Remember: You need your police report for mentoring outside of fellow MIT’s

A Mentor is: Calm, relaxed, prepared, confident and always looking for Gold in his clients.

The Internet is changing how young adults experience the world

The problem is, the educational systems have not kept up. Mental health specialists are also playing catchup with the growing challenges for young adults. This makes it difficult for many young adults to succeed in life. The search for a good life coach for young adults keeps growing in demand and will continue to do so in the future.

Why are things so challenging and so different for these generations?

The past two generations, Millennials (1983 - 1998) and Generation Z (1999+) have grown up in a world where they no longer believe anything older generations tell them. They have been bombarded by "false news", false advertising and non-stop spam. This ends up in them spending most of their time deleting what the older generations say to them.

When you live your life online, your "word" only means something until it is deleted. This form of impermanance leads to an odd phenomenon. "It isn't lying... I just wanted to save us from having any confrontations". "I was doing it for you". What is remarkable is that you will learn a method of working with them where, for the most-part, they will enjoy being truthful.

What is their Moto?

I spend most of my day deleting things you send to me. So if you tell me something I am not going to believe it unless you prove it to me?

How does being a Mentor for Young Adults Help?

We never lie. We don't throw recipes to change their lives at them. We listen. We empower them to make wise decisions. We help them look at the effects of their choices in a judgment-free setting. 95% of them will grow and thrive in that environment. This is what we train you to do. Each time. Every time. It is a wonder to see their growth every time and it is always their success you get to witness.

Create The Life
You Want to Live.

Create a rewarding career mentoring young adults and their families from your home online.

Are you that person who loves helping young adults succeed?
Are you tired of doing great work at your day-job that does not fulfill the best of you?
Do you wish you could love going to work every day and really making a difference in the world?

This is what we do!

As mentors for young adults, we don't merely fix what isn't working for a client, we help them find their personal greatness.

You will learn how to create an open bond with your client, allowing them to share their truths and empowering them to create a path towards success.

With one intensive weekend of training and 36 weeks of one session a week, you could receive the training to join us as a professional mentor for teens, young adults and their families.

Create The Career You Want to Embrace.

Bring All of Your Life Experiences, Your Caring, Your Humor to Mentoring Young Adults.

Being a great young adult mentor is not just about creating a safe place for the client and learning to seek out their greatness through the challenges. It is also about bringing the best of you to a place where you can share that with your client to help them grow.

All of the things that have made you who you are will help you learn how to help clients help themselves. Your triumphs. Your challenges. Your heartbreaks. Your fears. All of that will make you a greater Mentor.

Your truths as a human being will help you help them find their truths. In some ways, it makes all the good and the bad in life worthwhile, because all of it will help your clients do better in life.

Create the Connections You Want to Build

Join a Community of Fellow Mentors All Passionate About Mentoring Young Adults.

It is truly wonderful working online from home. Having clients work with you through Skype or Zoom is a great way to work and still have so much time for yourself. No commuting. No loud people in the next cubicle (no guarantees if your dog sees a squirrel though). You will also learn to take great notes while with your client (as you are at your computer facing them). That means very little extra time besides the time you are paid for.

Here's the challenge. You will love the connection with the client but you will miss sharing what you learn and having people to get feedback to unless you are working with an organization that promotes mentor communication, which we are!

Yes. Through World Wide Youth Mentoring Inc. (WWYM) you will have access to getting clients from us, continuing education, live workshops and monthly mentor chats. There also opportunities to work as a facilitator for the MPW workshops for mentors of lower degrees.

This helps you feel you are part of a community. You have connections that will become incredibly meaningful. This is such an exciting and moving profession but no one really understands the depth of the work the way your fellow Mentors will.

There are many life coaching programs and quite a few mentoring programs for young adults these days. The biggest question you have to ask yourself is: "Does this speak to me and my goals in helping people"?

If your focus is on helping young adults or troubled teens, make sure the mentoring program you choose is focused expressly on that. That requires a system that covers the big picture from: Anxiety; Low Self-esteem" Lack of organization, etc., to the simplest daily challenges like sleep-wake routines, homework planning and communication skills.

World Wide Youth Mentoring is a mentoring program that not only helps unblock troubled young adults but helps them find their "hero's journey" and keep them on the path towards success.

Finding the right mentoring program:

Make sure that the focus of any program you choose is about helping young adults succeed first and foremost. That there is long term training available and that you will be supported once you being mentoring young adults to have the opportunity to grow in a community of like-minded individuals.

Our mentors program "Mentors Professional Workshop" is a complete program that helps the Mentor In Training (MIT) go through the same process we want our clients to: a slow steady self-discovery and a new mindset focused on achievable goals vs. "fixing what is broken".

By bringing a person towards their success mentality and letting them discover what works, what doesn't and how to make changes free of judgement, we allow these mentees the opportunity to deal with anything life can throw at them.

Learn more about it right here! Have a question? Check our our FAQ's or ask for a free 15 minute consultation with Ken when you are ready for the next step.

Read our "Mentor's Credo" for an idea of our mission.

Good Luck!

Hello Nicole,

You are not alone. There are lots of people who look like you. Lots of people. When they see someone like me who is overweight, they make judgments. When I am at my present weight (I have gained and lost Arnold Schwarzenegger's body weight several times over during my 50 odd years) and go into a swanky coffee shop and order a low-fat chocolate, they always ask me, "Do you want whipped cream with that?"

When I lose 20 more pounds, go to a coffee shop and ask for low-fat hot chocolate, they say, "You don't want whipped cream with that?"

When I am at my perfect body weight (for me) they never ask me for whipped cream.
What do we learn from this? Nicole, you can't begin to understand what it means to be someone who needs to protect themselves with a layer of fat to feel safe, or the joy comes from the forbidden fruit that is the cocoa bean, the white bread rush, or the sugar buzz.

For whatever reason, your clan chose to find solace in belittling others as a form of comfort. I did notice that you had $300 worth of cosmetic paint on your face. You seem to thing that artifice is art.
Here's what I have to say to all those with a bad body image: look for real beauty.

It is not in your body, which shall betray the best of us with time. Look for self love first, because a loving man or woman is always kind and inspires instead of ridicules. Seek out those who are kind and help inspire you to be your best, who challenge you in those moments of weakness when you feel the need to get the buzz that bad food gives you, and to forgive the skinny people who don't understand. There are people out there who are in great shape who have kindness, who admit their struggles and don't need to sensationalize by shaming others.

And to Nicole: yes, you seem smart. You have good comedic timing, but shame on you. Yes. You got fame (for a second). You got notoriety. But you have proven the thing that I try so hard to teach the Millennials I work with who feel there's no point in working hard at school when you can get more famous being mean, stupid, or embarrassing in this world: that being a good person and living in the non-digital moment is what life is about. You have shown how bullying can travel. Look. I'm writing about you. Now, goodbye. Learn from Elwood P. Dowd, the character in Harvey. (It's a black and white film... give it a try).

"Years ago, my mother used to say to me, she'd say, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be.' -- She always called me Elwood -- 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me."

Do you know where you were when you heard that Robin Williams had died? I do. I felt like I had lost a family friend. Back in the day when TV meant something, Robin was a breath of fresh air, even on Happy Days.

He even made the Fonz look cooler. Then there was Mork and Mindy. His Johnny Carson appearances, including being one of the last two guests to be on Carson's show.
Robin's love of Jonathan Winters helped a whole new generation learn about a brilliant, improvisational comedian who had a great influence on Robin. From The World According to Garp, The Fisher King, Good Morning Vietnam to Aladdin, Robin grew and brought us along with him with kindness, humility and a never-ending well of creativity.

Then one of my troubled teen's parents said to me: "You know, Robin seemed a lot like your clients" and it hit me. He did seem a lot like my clients. Creative people. Sensitive people. People struggling with life. Some with Aspergers. Some with Bipolar or other mental health issues but they had one advantage that Robin did not (I really wasn't going to say me, please)... they had not learned how to succeed in life. They were stuck and nothing before our work had worked. The work which did help them was being mentored to use their talents to rise above their challenges. To have a mentor that could discuss their private fears free of the "real world", friends and family.

Of course, this made me happy and hopeful for my clients but very, very sad for my lost family friend. Robin. Through his successes, his genius, his drive to push himself into new territories, Robing played the old magician's trick of misdirection. We were looking at the wrong hand while the other was suffering.

There are three things I will take away from this.

1)	Those who can should decide right now to mentor our troubled Millenials. Millenials with addictions, those with anxiety, those with mental illness and those with learning challenges.

2)	We must be ever-vigilant to also mentor the Millenials who seem to be successful but underneath the surface are also suffering. Those with the same issues and more who are good at misdirection

3)	In a world filled with divisions, hatred, war, gatherings of people wishing to cut off the head of democracy, we must counter that with love for all people, find those Millenials who might fall under the thrall of hatred and calls to war and help these Millenials to find how to be great from their powers of kindness, grace and charity.

Here is what I promise to do. I intend to train 1000 mentors by the year 2020, to help young people, focusing on Millenials in inner cities and underdeveloped nations to offer the three things I have just mentioned. This I so vow.

If you know someone who would be great at becoming a professional Mentor for teens and young adults please email us at mentor@RealLifeCoaching.ca
